A Joyful Celebration of Christmas Music

Christmas Concerts on the Costa del Sol

On the evenings of Sunday, December 8th, in Fuengirola, and Tuesday, December 10th, in Marbella, Choir and Orchestra Collegium Musicum under the direction of Delyth Bressington delivered a Christmas concert series that left audiences leaving in high spirits. Both performances played to full houses, with standing ovations and radiant smiles marking the end of each evening.

The programme was a masterful blend of classical and festive works, opening with Charpentier’s Te Deum: Prelude. Trumpeter Ángel T. San Bartolomé, soloist of the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra, set a majestic tone with a performance that showcased his virtuosity and commanding presence. Vivaldi’s Gloria followed, with the orchestra and choir bringing this Baroque masterpiece to life through their dynamic expression. The program continued with Mendelssohn’s Es Wird ein Stern aus Jakob aufgeh’n, from the oratorio Christus, its choral richness resonating beautifully in the venues.

A tender moment came with Karl Jenkins’ Lullay, a contemporary yet timeless lullaby, and the traditional Mexican carol A la Puerta del Cielo, which added a global flavor to the program. John Rutter’s Star Carol sparkled with its cheerful and melodic charm, showcasing Collegium Musicum’s versatility.

Handel’s Let the Bright Seraphim, performed by soprano Susana Montal and trumpeter Ángel T. San Bartolomé was an interplay of voice and instrument. Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins, where soloists Alison Harling and Sofia Tkach displayed virtuosic interplay, blending technique with emotion. The evening also featured Leroy Anderson’s jubilant Sleigh Ride, which brought a playful and festive energy to the halls. The centerpiece of the program, Lloyd Larson’s cantata The Glory of Christmas, was a triumph. The choir delivered each movement with clarity and heartfelt emotion, from the inviting “Come and worship the new-born King” to the radiant conclusion, “The Glory of Christmas.” To close the evening, the audience was invited to join in for Feliz Navidad. The spirited singalong filled the venues with warmth and joy, leaving everyone uplifted.

With happy faces and standing ovations marking both performances, Collegium Musicum proved once again why they are a cornerstone of the Costa del Sol musical community. This year’s Christmas concert was not just a performance—it was a celebration of unity, tradition, and the festive spirit. Next year they will be celebrating their 50th anniversary and the celebration concerts at the end of May will be Mozart’s “Great” Mass in C minor. Not to be missed! www.colmus.org
